Why Your “Small” Work Matters
We’ve talked about the "Paneled Houses," the "Bags with Holes," and the "Turning Point" of December 18. But the book of Haggai ends with a personal message to a man named
Zerubbabel.
Zerubbabel was the governor. He was the one responsible for the heavy lifting. And let’s be honest: the Temple he was building was kind of... small. Compared to the legendary, gold-drenched Temple of Solomon that stood before it, Zerubbabel’s project looked like a "nothing" (Haggai 2:3). I feel this way, and maybe you feel that way today! You’re trying to build a godly family, a faithful career, or a life of integrity, but compared to the "giants" of the faith, your work feels tiny! I mean what is my little donation really doing?
To encourage him, God says something incredible:
"I will take you, Zerubbabel... and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you." (Haggai 2:23)
To understand this, we have to know the backstory. Generations earlier, God had told Zerubbabel’s grandfather, a king who had turned away from Him, that he was being "pulled off" like a signet ring (Jeremiah 22:24). When God says this to Zerubbabel, He is reversing a curse. He is saying, "The line is restored. The story isn't over. Your small, faithful work has put the ring back on My hand."
You are the Signature of God
A signet ring was used to sign official documents. It represented the authority and the "seal" of the King. As a nurse, a parent, a student, or a friend, your "small" acts of obedience are God’s signature on the world.
When you choose patience over a vent session... that’s the seal.
When you pray for someone in secret... that’s the seal.
When you show up to build the foundation when you’d rather be in your "paneled house"... that’s the signature of God.
Your Small is His Big
Zerubbabel didn't live to see the "Greater Glory" Haggai promised. But centuries later, a man named Jesus walked into that very Temple site. Zerubbabel’s faithfulness in the "small" things paved the way for the Savior of the world. Your legacy isn't defined by the size of the building you leave behind; it’s defined by the Foundation you built on. If you are building on Christ, your work is eternal.
Consider Your Ways
Do you ever feel like your spiritual "building" is too small to matter?
How would your day change if you viewed yourself as God’s "Signet Ring"—a chosen representative of His authority in your workplace or home?
A Signet Ring Prayer
"Lord,
Thank You that You don't measure my life by the size of my 'temple,' but by the faithfulness of my heart. Thank You for choosing me to be Your representative today. When I feel small or insignificant, remind me that I am Your Signet Ring. Use my hands, my words, and my work to leave Your signature on the world.
Amen."
We have cleared the rubble. We have marked the day. Now, let’s go out and build!
