Is Your Struggle Actually a Rescue?

One of the things I love most about the Bible is really beginning to understand that it is “living.” In this serires we are going over the Book of Exodus specifically the plagues of Egypt. I hear you and honestly myself asking “How do these plagues relate to today?” In this post we are going to talk about that very question!

We’ve all been there (if you haven’t, you are lying :). You look at your bank account and realize that despite working 50 hours a week, you’re still just one "check engine" light away from a crisis! It feels like a Never-Ending Cycle—the more you produce, the more the "Taskmaster" (inflation, debt, bills) demands. We call it "the grind," but clinically, it’s a Neurological Traumatic Bond. Under chronic stress, our brain’s "fear center" (the amygdala) takes over, making it physically hard to imagine a life outside the struggle.

In our study, God didn't just want to move the Israelites' bodies; He wanted to break their Mental Dependency on a system that was designed to keep them exhausted. When we are stuck in a "Modern Egypt"—whether that is a toxic job, a crippling financial cycle, or a "hustle" that is killing us—our brains actually form a Neurological Traumatic Bond. Science shows that under chronic stress, the brain’s "fear center" (the amygdala) takes over, making it physically difficult to imagine a life outside the current struggle. We become "addicted" to the stress hormones. A neurological traumatic bond is an addiction to the intermittent reinforcement of stress and relief.

When you are in a "Brickyard" (modern stress cycle), your brain relies on four main chemicals to keep the bond strong:

  1. Dopamine: This is the "hope" chemical. In a toxic job, it’s the small bonus or the rare praise from a boss. Your brain craves that hit, so it stays in the cycle, hoping for the next one.

  2. Cortisol: This is the "stress" chemical. Chronic cortisol keeps your amygdala (fear center) on high alert. You become so used to high stress that "peace" actually feels boring or dangerous.

  3. Oxytocin: This is the "bonding" chemical. It usually flares up during the "makeup" phase after a crisis. It tricks your brain into feeling a deep, protective loyalty to the person or system that is actually hurting you.

  4. Endorphins: These act as the body's natural painkillers. They mask the emotional "whip" of the day, allowing you to tolerate conditions that should be intolerable.

The Israelites had a neurological bond to Egypt. Despite being whipped, they had 400 years of predictability, and the brain often prefers a “known hell” over an “unknown heaven.” Clinically, this bond results in Cognitive Distortion, where the patient begins to believe statements such as “I can’t survive without this system,” “If I just work harder, the Taskmaster will be happy,” and “The desert (freedom) is scarier than the brickyard (slavery).” This is why God’s “Plagues” were so intense—He had to use Pattern Interrupts to literally break the chemical addiction the Israelites had to the Egyptian system. He had to prove the system was “undrinkable” (The Nile) and “unsafe” (The Hail) to force the brain to let go of the bond. Here is how the plagues mirror the “Interventions” God uses when we get stuck in modern troubles:

1. The "Nile" of our Security: Breaking the Dopamine Loop

  • The Plague: The river turns to blood.

  • In our modern world, "Hustle Culture" is our Nile. We rely on career wins and social status to give us those constant hits of dopamine—the brain's "feel-good" reward chemical. But what happens when that source "turns to blood"? The job you once loved becomes toxic, or the goals you finally reached feel empty. Suddenly, the "water" you were drinking for satisfaction starts to taste like iron. You realize that your "hustle" isn't feeding you; it's bleeding you dry. It’s no longer providing life; it’s just demanding more of your "blood" (energy, time, health). When God makes this source "undrinkable," He is performing a downregulation. A clinical process where the brain reduces its sensitivity to a constant stimulus. If you keep getting "cheap" dopamine from a toxic source, your brain loses its ability to enjoy the things that actually matter. God knows that if the false source keeps providing "water," you will never leave the toxicity. By letting that source fail, He is forcing a Dopamine Detox. The goal is to reset your reward system, resulting in forcing you to stop chasing things that only look successful and start finding satisfaction in things that actually sustain life—like rest, connection, and purpose.

2. The "Livestock" of our Savings

  • The Plague: The wealth of Egypt dies in the field.

  • When prices skyrocket and savings dwindle, we fall into "Survival Mode." We are living in an economy where your "livestock" (your savings, your 401k, the value of your dollar) feels like it’s dropping dead. It’s terrifying! But clinically, this is a Resource Collapse. God is allowing the "Safety Net" to tear so we stop trusting in the "Bank of Egypt" and start looking for a Provider that isn't tied to the stock market. In Egypt, the livestock were the "Safety Net." Today, God allows our safety nets to fail to move us from "Survival" (Amygdala) to "Faith/Logic" (Prefrontal Cortex). Studies on Neuroplasticity show that we only develop new "neural pathways" when the old ones stop working. If the "Egyptian Bank" always worked, our brains would stay lazy and dependent. By allowing the "Livestock" to fail, God is literally forcing your brain to grow—to find new ways of problem-solving and to build a "Trust Muscle" that doesn't rely on a bank balance.

3. The "Boils" of our Burnout

  • The Plague: Physical sores that stop even the "Magicians" (the experts) from working.

  • We ignore our mental health until our bodies force us to stop. This is Burnout. Your "skin" is crawling with stress. When the cycle of making bricks becomes so intense that your body literally shuts down. God uses these moments as a Physical Stop. He is proving that you are not a machine meant to produce; you are a human meant to be healed. This is Somatization. In nursing, we see this when a patient's emotional pain turns into physical symptoms (headaches, ulcers, "boils" of shingles or stress rashes). God uses "The Boils" as a physical "Circuit Breaker." When we refuse to leave the "Brickyard" mentally, He allows our bodies to say, "No more." It is a stop designed to protect the heart by disabling the hands for a season of rest.

4. The Hail: The Shattering of the "Safe Ceiling"

  • The Plague: The "Safe Sky" rains fire and ice.

  • This is the moment a major "macro" event hits—like a massive change in your industry, a sudden change in government policy, or a global event that shatters the "sky" you thought protected you. Clinically, this is Radical Reality Acceptance. *We often live in a state of Normalcy Bias—the mental state where we believe that because things have been "fine," they will always stay "fine." The Hail is a "Pattern Interrupt" that forces the brain to accept that the old "protection" (the Sky/the Industry/the Government) is no longer a safe ceiling. It moves the patient from Denial into Urgent Preparation.

5. The Locusts: The "Nowhere Else to Go" Intervention

  • The Plague: Every "leftover" resource is eaten.

  • The Locusts represent the Total Resource Depletion. This is when your "Plan B" and "Plan C" are also taken away. You looked for another job, but the market dried up. You tried to cut costs, but prices rose again. This is Forced Minimalism. There is a clinical phenomenon called Decision Fatigue. When we have too many "Egyptian" options to stay, we never choose the "Wilderness" of freedom. By sending the locusts to eat the "leftovers," and removing every green leaf of the "Old Life," He is reducing the cognitive load on the patient. He is making the "Exit" the only logical choice left for survival!

Nursing Note:

From a clinical perspective, these “Modern Plagues”—such as a failed promotion, a financial dip, and burnout—are considered a Pattern Interrupt ( which is a technique used to change a person’s state or habit by unexpectedly breaking their routine, forcing the mind to seek a new direction).God isn’t “ruining your life.” Instead, He is cleaning up your dependencies. Science supports this idea, as the human spirit is designed for Antifragility—the ability to grow stronger specifically because of stressors. By tearing down your “Modern Egypt,” God is guiding you through change. Initially, you are in the pre-contemplation stage, feeling fine in the brickyard. As you move to the contemplation stage, you witness the Nile turning to blood and begin to realize that something is wrong. In the preparation stage, the death of the livestock makes it clear that you must leave. Finally, in the Action stage, as darkness falls, you take the decisive step to walk out.

From a nursing perspective, the Israelites were experiencing Chronic Occupational Stress. They couldn’t imagine a life where they didn’t have to “earn” their right to exist every single day. Chronic Occupational Stress is a state of ongoing exhaustion where a person’s identity is completely tied to their productivity. God’s intervention in the plagues served as a Pattern Interrupt. The goal was to prove that the “Economy” isn’t God. The result was that He systematically broke the things they thought they needed—the river, the cattle, the crops—to show them that they were actually Protected Persons who didn’t need to be slaves to survive.

When a patient’s external world is altered so drastically that their old “coping mechanisms” (such as staying in the toxic environment for food/safety) are no longer physically possible, God is effectively “Evicting” the Israelites from their comfort zone. Science shows that humans are biologically wired for Homeostasis—keeping things the same. We will stay in a “toxic” situation as long as our basic needs are met. By cutting that chain, God isn’t being “mean”—He is a nurse moving a patient out of a room that is literally on fire. He is proving that External Stability is an illusion, forcing the patient to find Internal Stability in their relationship with Him.

In our lives today, when the economy feels like it’s failing and the cycle feels never-ending, it might not be a “punishment.” It might be a Clinical Intervention—God de-programming the “Slave Mentality” out of us so we can finally trust Him to provide in the “Wilderness” of a broken world.
